USPS Redelivery Tracking: What to Do

What is Redelivery?
If the United States Postal Service (USPS) was unable to successfully deliver a package, then the carrier usually leaves a redelivery notice at the end customer's address to notify them of the delivery attempt. If the customer received a PS Form 3849, then they can schedule another delivery using the tracking or barcode number on the back of this notice.
Redeliveries can be scheduled through the USPS website, 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. For same-day Redelivery, make sure your request is submitted by 2am CST Monday-Saturday, or the delivery attempt will come in the next day.
Why Wasn’t the Parcel Delivered?
If you received a PS form 3849 Redelivery notice, there are some common causes. If any of these reasons apply to your customer's order, make sure to correct any issues before redelivery. Usual suspects and key reasons for an unsuccessful delivery include:
- Mailbox was full
- No available parcel lockers or PO Box in the neighborhood
- Item was too large to fit in the mailbox
- Signature is required
- Postage or other fees are required on delivery
- Item could not be left in a secure place
Which Areas Is Redelivery Available In?
While the Redelivery service is available in most areas of the US, unfortunately it is not available in all. You can check if Redelivery is available for your required address, through the USPS site. Just click the link through to the USPS Redelivery Service Page and enter your customer's personal information. You will need the following contact information:
- Name
- Address
- Phone number
- Email address

USPS Redelivery Tracking
Not every USPS service provides tracking numbers, however when an order does have a USPS tracking number, it is generated and provided to the sender. Once you have your tracking number, you can track the status of your items at USPS Tracking. Only packages with the following scan events are eligible for Redelivery:
- Available for Redelivery or Pickup
- Receptacle Full / Item Oversized
- Reminder to Schedule Redelivery
- Notice Left
- Receptacle Blocked
- No Secure Location Available
- No Authorized Recipient Available
- Available for Pickup (Customer Pickup and Returned to Sender Only)
Does USPS Charge for Redelivery?
USPS provides free tools to track specific packages, however you are required to either register online or reach out with a text message and provide a tracking number. USPS does not charge a USPS redelivery fee for these services.
Does USPS Text You About Redelivery?
The United States Postal Inspection Service warns about receiving unsolicited texts from USPS. The carrier will not send customers text messages without the customer first requesting them. If you are receiving these messages, then it can be a text scam. If this is something you suspect, then you can email or call the company directly and verify with the post office and text, email or call they have sent.
